Basket/Patio Selection

About our summer flowering selection
Our whole range of varieties are grown in 10.5cm pots to give you a large established plant. They are not plantlets or just rooted cuttings.

Although we have titled this group "basket and patio" they do of course have many more uses! They can be used in any kind of container, flowerbeds and borders or raised beds. In general good drainage is required for all plants. Teapots, sinks, buckets and all manner of unusual containers all need one thing for successful plant growing: drainage holes!

For growing our plants in containers we recommend good quality multipurpose compost. Your plants should get off to a good start because our hand made compost contains a long-life controlled release fertiliser. When your plants are established (new roots having reached the container walls) you may wish to give liquid feed. Start at half the recommended strength to take account of the existing slow release fertiliser.

For larger flowered varieties such as surfinias, dahlias and pelargoniums we recommend that faded and old blooms are removed ("deadheading") This is not just for aesthetic reasons, by preventing the plant from setting seed you will encourage the production of new blooms.

For more specific information, please see the notes on the genus pages for individual plant varieties. There you will find cultural information, including approximate height and spread information (which is intended as a guide only, based on our experience/opinion.)
